Meat and dairy are first on my break out for a few reasons. First, they don’t tend to have coupons. There are some exceptions…yogurt being the biggest – regularly having coupons AND being on sale – but, you can not really stock up on yogurt, and to stock up on meats and some types of dairy preparation and planning are involved.

• Plan ahead – will you cook or marinate the meat before freezing? Do you have the freezer bags available?
• Have extra freezer space available.
• Use items before they spoil – make sure to have a system so you use meats before the freezer burns them or it has just been too long to cook them.

To realize extra savings know your butcher and dairy manager’s markdown schedules. If you are not able to quickly figure it out because you are not seeing a markdown section, or you don’t happen upon markdown meats or products then ask. The store does these markdowns to move the product and avoid loss, they should be happy to share this information with you.

Stock up on sales & when there is a week that there are no good meat sales, or something else has eaten into your grocery budget, have a “freezer week”. This always feels like a bonus to me. Saving a little extra money in the grocery budget that week and making sure the freezer stock is being used in time.

Sales to watch for sock up opportunities are…

• 8 hour sales
• 24-48 hour sales
• Front page ad sales
• Markdowns

I am noticing here in Southern California the stores host these sales about 1 time a month and rotate chicken, ground beef, roasts, eggs and cheeses in the sales. Is there a schedule or system in your area similar or different? Do you know of any other ways to save on meat and dairy? Please share!!
